Ukraine Marks 35 Years of Independence as European Leaders Rally Behind Kyiv

Ukraine marked Ukraine Independence Day 2026 on August 24 with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined by European leaders in Kyiv, as the country continues to defend itself against Russia's ongoing invasion. European Leaders Gather in Kyiv

The presence of European leaders provided a strong show of political support for Ukraine on its national day. Costa said the European Union would continue supporting Ukraine militarily, economically, politically and diplomatically, while reaffirming the bloc's position that any lasting peace should respect international law. The leaders also took part in discussions linked to the "Coalition of the Willing", with Ukraine seeking additional assistance as Russian attacks continue.

Ukraine Seeks More Air Defence

Air defence has become one of Kyiv's most urgent concerns ahead of the coming winter. Zelenskyy said Ukraine needs hundreds of additional Patriot interceptor missiles to protect its cities and critical infrastructure from intensified Russian missile and drone attacks. European leaders discussed ways to strengthen Ukraine's defensive capabilities. The UK also announced support for Ukraine's domestic production of long-range missiles by sharing technology connected to the British-made Storm Shadow system, in cooperation with France. 

Growing Role for European Support

The latest commitments underline Europe's increasingly important role in supporting Ukraine. The European Union said it had provided €220.2 billion in military, humanitarian and budgetary assistance since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. European governments are also preparing for the possibility that Ukraine will require sustained military and economic support beyond the current phase of the war.

Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Will Not Give Up Its Independence

In his Independence Day address, Zelenskyy said Ukraine wants peace but will not surrender its independence or accept territorial concessions simply to end the conflict. He presented the anniversary as a reminder that Ukrainians had chosen independence through a democratic vote in 1991 and remain determined to preserve their sovereignty. The day also included ceremonies honouring Ukrainian soldiers killed during the war. Rather than holding a traditional military parade, Ukraine displayed domestically produced drones and other defence technologies that have become central to its wartime strategy. 

War Continues as Ukraine Marks Independence

The anniversary comes during a particularly difficult period in the conflict. The EU reported that at least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 injured in Ukraine during July 2026, making it the deadliest month for civilians since May 2022 according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission. With Russian attacks continuing and winter approaching, Kyiv is pressing its European partners for stronger air defence and long-term assistance.
