The Nepal glacier disaster 2026 has become one of the region’s deadliest natural disasters in years, with more than 1,300 people confirmed dead and thousands still missing after catastrophic floods and mudslides swept through Nepal and the neighbouring Tibet border region.

Despite diminishing hopes of finding survivors, rescuers have made several remarkable discoveries.

Four people were rescued alive during a three-day period, including two Nepalis trapped in a hydropower tunnel and a Chinese worker rescued after surviving around 10 days inside another tunnel.

The Chinese survivor was evacuated by helicopter after rescue teams reached him inside a 225-metre hydropower tunnel.

These rescues have encouraged teams to continue searching damaged hydropower facilities where workers may still be trapped.

Gyirong Border Crossing Destroyed

Across the border in Tibet, the disaster almost completely destroyed the Gyirong border crossing, a major trade and travel route between China and Nepal.

Reuters reported that Chinese authorities had confirmed 43 deaths and 519 missing people as of Saturday. Among those still unaccounted for were 261 foreigners from 23 countries.

The five-storey customs building and much of the border infrastructure were buried beneath mud and debris.
