Malaysia Tightens Hiking Rules as Viral 'Compressed Hikes' Spark Rescue Surge

Malaysia is tightening its hiking rules after a sharp rise in lost and stranded hikers this year, with a viral social-media trend of rushing through tough mountain routes drawing the attention of officials.

The Numbers Behind the Crackdown

Malaysia recorded 52 lost-hiker cases involving 114 people in the first five months of 2026 — nearly 30% more than the same period a year earlier. The spike has pushed authorities to tighten rules and access to several demanding routes.

What Is a 'Compressed Hike'?

Officials are particularly worried about so-called "compressed hikes" — routes that normally take several days, squeezed into a single day. Some hikers attempt them with minimal equipment, often chasing dramatic footage to post online, and end up lost, injured or stranded in remote areas.

Hike Smart, Not Viral

The message from the authorities is simple: a viral clip is not worth your safety. Plan for the real duration of a trail, carry proper gear, register where required, and never attempt a multi-day route in one rushed push.
