Champions League 2026/27: PSG, Bayern & Barcelona Set the Pace

The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League is up and running, and Europe's biggest clubs have wasted no time. In the league-phase format, heavyweights opened with statement wins, with PSG, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester United among the early pacesetters.

How the League Phase Works

For the third season running, the Champions League uses a single 36-team league table. Each club plays eight different opponents; the top eight go straight to the last 16, while teams finishing 9th-24th enter a knockout play-off round. It rewards consistency across the whole phase, not just one good group.

Early Pacesetters

After the opening matchday, PSG and Bayern Munich set the pace on goal difference, with Barcelona and Manchester United close behind. Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Arsenal also opened with wins, underlining how tight the race for the top eight is likely to be.

What to Watch

With the table set to shift fast, even the giants cannot afford a slow run. Every point counts toward avoiding the play-off round and securing a direct last-16 spot, which makes each matchday must-watch.
