Najib house arrest has officially been approved after Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim, consented to a conditional royal pardon allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his current prison sentence at home until August 23, 2028. The decision was announced on September 18, 2026, following a meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board.

According to the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department, the decision was finalised during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

Under the Najib house arrest decision, he must pay the reduced fine of RM50 million and comply with all conditions attached to the conditional pardon.

The authorities have not publicly disclosed all of the specific conditions.

If Najib breaches the stipulated conditions, the conditional pardon can be revoked and he can be required to return to prison to complete the remainder of the sentence.

Why Is Najib Serving a Sentence?

Najib began serving his sentence at Kajang Prison in August 2022 following his conviction in the SRC International case involving RM42 million.

He was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million. In 2024, an earlier Pardons Board decision reduced his prison term to six years and lowered the fine to RM50 million.

The latest Najib house arrest ruling changes where he serves the remainder of that current sentence but does not overturn the SRC International conviction.

What About Najib’s Other 1MDB Case?

The latest conditional pardon concerns Najib’s current SRC International sentence.

Separately, the High Court sentenced Najib in December 2025 to 15 years in prison and imposed an RM11.38 billion fine following his conviction on abuse-of-power and money-laundering charges in another 1MDB-related case. Najib has appealed that judgment.

That separate legal process remains relevant to what happens after his current sentence ends.

Current Status

The Najib house arrest decision allows him to remain under home detention until August 23, 2028, subject to the conditions of the pardon.

As of the initial announcement on September 18, Reuters reported that it was not immediately clear exactly when Najib would leave Kajang Prison and begin serving the remainder of the sentence at home.

The development follows years of legal proceedings over Najib’s previous claim that an earlier royal addendum had allowed him to serve his sentence under house arrest. His judicial review bid was dismissed in December 2025, and he withdrew his appeal in April 2026.

What Comes Next

Attention will now turn to the implementation of the Najib house arrest order and the conditions governing his home detention.
