Squash Becomes Malaysia’s Biggest Gold Contributor
Squash was the standout sport in the Malaysia Asian Games 2026 campaign, producing four gold medals.
S. Sivasangari and Ng Eain Yow successfully defended their respective individual titles, while Malaysia also captured gold in both the women’s and men’s team competitions.
The results strengthened Malaysia’s hopes ahead of squash’s Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, with Sivasangari and Eain Yow already securing qualification. BERNAMA
Track cycling also provided one of the Games’ biggest Malaysian moments when Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang won the men’s keirin gold in what was his final Asian Games appearance. BERNAMA

Where Malaysia’s Nine Golds Came From
The Malaysia Asian Games 2026 gold medals came from squash, karate, esports, sepak takraw and track cycling.
Malaysia had originally targeted six golds, seven silvers and 20 bronzes. Although the contingent exceeded the gold target by three, it finished with 16 bronzes, leaving the overall total one medal short of the 33-medal objective.

What Malaysian Fans Are Talking About
The biggest discussion is whether this generation can turn Asian Games success into Olympic medals.
Malaysia matched its nine-gold record but narrowly missed the chance to set a new national high after the men’s hockey team and men’s padel doubles pair both finished with silver medals late in the Games. BERNAMA
The strong performances in squash, cycling and sepak takraw have nevertheless given Malaysian sports fans plenty to celebrate.
What Comes Next
Attention will now shift towards the 2027 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur and preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
For Malaysia, the nine-gold performance provides a strong foundation, but the next challenge will be turning regional and Asian success into consistent results at the highest international level.
