The Anthony Loke resignation announcement has become a major political development in Malaysia after the DAP secretary-general offered to step down as Transport Minister. Loke announced the decision on September 19 following an emergency DAP Central Executive Committee meeting, while confirming that the party’s other ministers and deputy ministers would remain in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

Loke said his decision was the party’s response to the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, which allows Najib to serve the remainder of his current SRC International sentence under house arrest subject to stated conditions.

Loke also said DAP respects the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s constitutional power to grant pardons, while explaining that the party had its own position on the decision.

The Anthony Loke resignation offer only involves his Cabinet position. He remains DAP secretary-general and Member of Parliament for Seremban.

DAP Will Remain in the Unity Government

DAP has confirmed that its other Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers will continue serving in the federal government.

Loke said keeping the other DAP representatives in government was intended to maintain political stability and ensure that government administration continues normally.

This means the Anthony Loke resignation does not represent a withdrawal of DAP from the unity government.

The party currently remains part of Pakatan Harapan and continues to support Anwar’s administration.

Anwar said he had not received Loke’s formal resignation letter as of September 20 and planned to discuss the matter with him in person.

Loke has continued performing official duties as Transport Minister in the meantime.

On September 21 and 22, he proceeded with an official visit to China to represent Malaysia at the 12th APEC Transport Ministers’ Meeting in Beijing before joining Anwar’s delegation in Shanghai. The Transport Ministry said Loke would deal with matters relating to his resignation after returning to Malaysia.

What Happens to Transport Ministry Projects?

Loke said existing Transport Ministry programmes and approved projects would continue even after his departure.

He noted that the ministry’s administrative operations are not dependent on one individual minister and that ongoing plans would continue through the normal government process.

The ministry has similarly stated that its administrative functions and daily operations remain unaffected while the resignation process is being handled.

What Comes Next

The next major development in the Anthony Loke resignation story will be his formal discussion with Anwar after completing his China trip.

Attention will then turn to whether Anwar accepts the resignation, when it will formally take effect and who will subsequently be responsible for the Transport Ministry portfolio.

For now, Loke remains involved in official ministerial duties, while DAP’s other ministers continue serving in the unity government.
